The geology of England's Lake District is dominated by sedimentary and volcanic rocks of mainly Ordovician age underpinned by large granitic intrusions. Younger sedimentary sequences outcrop on the edges of the Lake District area, with Silurian to the south, Carboniferous to the north, east, and west and Permo-Triassic to the west and east. The entire area was covered by a Mesozoic sequence that was eroded off during the Palaeogene uplift related to the opening of the North Atlantic. During the Quaternary the area was affected by repeated glaciations, which sculpted the current mountainous landscape.
Volksgenosse (plural Volksgenossen) is a German language term meaning a fellow member of a community or compatriot (translated literally as people's comrade). The word was recorded as early as 1798 and its usage grew within the Völkisch movement of German ethnic nationalism, which led to its use to denote a person of the same "blood community". The term became common parlance within the Nazi Party, then the Third Reich, as a way to distinguish ethnic Germans from other groups, such as Jews and Gypsies. Due to these associations, the word gradually fell out of use after Germany's defeat in World War II and subsequent denazification efforts.

A helical armature is a form of air-gap electric motor or generator armature wound in a helical fashion as opposed to a conventional random or orthocyclic winding. Such a design is of interest in superconducting motor and generation technology, though comparatively little research has been done on the subject. An important and remarkable feature of helical armature windings is that they have no end windings. Moreover, as each conductor follows a helical path of constant pitch, helical windings are not easily divided into active and end regions. An important downside, though, is that such armatures provide poor winding factors.

Cartwheel cells are neurons of the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) where they greatly outnumber the other inhibitory interneurons of the DCN. Their somas lie on the superficial side of the pyramidal layer of the DCN, and their dendrites receive input from the parallel fibres of the granule cell layer. Their axons do not extend beyond the dorsal cochlear nucleus but synapse with other cartwheel cells and pyramidal cells within the DCN releasing GABA and glycine onto their targets.
