It was the 59th edition of the Italian Open and was part of the Tennis Masters Series of the 2002 ATP Tour and of Tier I of the 2002 WTA Tour. Both the men's and women's events took place at the Foro Italico in Rome in Italy. The men's tournament was played from May 6 through May 12, 2002 while the women's tournament was played from 13 May through 19 May 2002.
