• Richard Wetherill begins excavating Chaco Canyon.
• George H. Pepper from the American Museum of Natural History leads the Hyde Exploring Expedition in excavating Pueblo Bonito (ending 1899).
• A. S. Murray of the British Museum begins excavating Enkomi, Cyprus.
