Sassandra lies on the Gulf of Guinea at the mouth of the Sassandra River. The town was founded by the Portuguese as Santo André and was later run by the British, then the French as a seaport for timber. The town declined in the 1960s after San Pédro's port was completed. Sassandra's main industry is now fishing.

Sassandra is known for its beaches and lighthouse, while the Gaoulou National Park lies nearby. It is served by Sassandra Airport.

In 2021, the population of the sub-prefecture of Sassandra was 87,945.

Climate

Sassandra has a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw) with year-round very high humidity and extreme heat discomfort. Sassandra sees two rainy seasons: the main rains occur from April to July, with a second shorter and lighter rain period from October to December. There are two very distinct dry seasons: a foggy, cloudy, slightly cooler dry season in August and September and a longer dry period dominated by the harmattan wind from the Sahara between mid-December and mid-March, resulting in clearer skies than during any other part of the year. |location = Sassandra (1961–1990) |metric first = yes |single line = yes |temperature colour = pastel |Jan high C = 30.1 |Feb high C = 30.1 |Mar high C = 31.0 |Apr high C = 30.9 |May high C = 29.8 |Jun high C = 27.9 |Jul high C = 27.1 |Aug high C = 26.5 |Sep high C = 27.5 |Oct high C = 28.5 |Nov high C = 29.6 |Dec high C = 29.5 |year high C = 29.0 |Jan mean C = 26.1 |Feb mean C = 26.9 |Mar mean C = 27.0 |Apr mean C = 26.5 |May mean C = 26.5 |Jun mean C = 25.4 |Jul mean C = 24.5 |Aug mean C = 24.2 |Sep mean C = 24.6 |Oct mean C = 25.5 |Nov mean C = 26.2 |Dec mean C = 26.1 |year mean C = 25.8 |Jan low C = 22.3 |Feb low C = 23.0 |Mar low C = 23.2 |Apr low C = 23.4 |May low C = 23.1 |Jun low C = 22.0 |Jul low C = 22.7 |Aug low C = 22.0 |Sep low C = 22.0 |Oct low C = 22.4 |Nov low C = 22.8 |Dec low C = 22.6 |year low C = 22.6 |rain colour = green |Jan rain mm = 15.8 |Feb rain mm = 35.7 |Mar rain mm = 52.6 |Apr rain mm = 96.9 |May rain mm = 235.1 |Jun rain mm = 529.1 |Jul rain mm = 191.4 |Aug rain mm = 32.1 |Sep rain mm = 43.6 |Oct rain mm = 84.5 |Nov rain mm = 119.6 |Dec rain mm = 72.8 |Jan sun = 208.3 |Feb sun = 192.4 |Mar sun = 211.4 |Apr sun = 218.3 |May sun = 182.5 |Jun sun = 112.1 |Jul sun = 128.8 |Aug sun = 123.8 |Sep sun = 154.4 |Oct sun = 216.0 |Nov sun = 224.2 |Dec sun = 206.2 |source 1 = NOAA{{Cite FTP | url = ftp://ftp.atdd.noaa.gov/pub/GCOS/WMO-Normals/TABLES/REG__I/IV/65599.TXT | server = National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration | title = Sassandra–Aero Climate Normals 1961-1990 | accessdate = December 21, 2015}}
