DirectVobSub/VSFilter were formerly part of a whole application known as VobSub which was also able to extract subtitles from DVD Video and create text-based subtitles, without ripping the DVD to a file first. The last version of VobSub was version 2.23, after which the development of VobSub ceased. VSFilter was a part of the guliverkli project on the SourceForge web site. The guliverkli project also includes the ability to extract subtitles from a DVD via the vobsub ripper program. However, development of guliverkli ceased in 2005 with version 2.37. In 2007, it became a part of the Guliverkli2 project, now known as DirectVobSub, starting with version 2.38.{{Cite web | url = http://www.codecs.com/download/VobSub.htm | title = VobSub 2.23 | publisher = codecs.com | date = May 26, 2004 | accessdate =August 3, 2010 | url = http://www.videohelp.com/tools/vobsub | title = VobSub | publisher = videohelp.com | date= December 11, 2002 | accessdate =August 3, 2010 |url = http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/dvobsub.htm |title = VobSub Guide |date = December 30, 2002 |accessdate = August 3, 2010 |publisher = Doom9 |url-status = dead |archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20100514095342/http://www.doom9.org/index.html?%2Fdvobsub.htm |archivedate = May 14, 2010 |df = mdy-all | url = http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/article_vobsub_page1.html | title = VobSub Subtitle Ripping, Playback and Permanent Subtitle Guide | publisher = divx-digest.com | date = December 17, 2005 | accessdate =August 3, 2010 | url = https://guliverkli2.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/guliverkli2/?view=log | title = Guliverkli2 SVN log | date = April 10, 2011 | accessdate = September 22, 2012 | url = https://github.com/mpc-hc/mpc-hc/tree/master/src/filters/transform/VSFilter | title = MPC-HC Git VSFilter log | website = GitHub | accessdate = September 22, 2012
DirectVobSub is also capable of extracting subtitles from a DVD without ripping it to a file first. "Vobsub rippers" are also available for the same effect. Note also the guliverkli project has a related project VSrip.
