Debe has grown from a small settlement into a key transit point which as has merged to some extent with Penal. A denomination high school was established by the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (Parvati Girls College). Debe had initially gained importance as a train stop during sugar cane production. However with the closure of the sugar industry Debe continued to be widely known for doubles and other delicacies. The area has also gained prominence for its wholesale marketing of agricultural produce in government managed Namdevco, which is the largest wholesale market in the country. Chutney music is believed to have originated in the Barrackpore-Debe-Penal area.

In 2013 the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway extension to Debe was successfully opened to intersect with the SS Erin Main Road and the M2 Ring Road making the area a key transit point. In 2012 construction begun on the south campus of the University of the West Indies.

Debe is administered by the Penal–Debe Regional Corporation.

Debe is a linear town, strung out along the SS Erin Road about midway from the 'second city' of San Fernando to Siparia, and located in the island of Trinidad. It is rapidly developing, and despite being primarily known for agricultural production, has now developed a reputation as a vibrant and expanding commercial area. Property values have risen in past years and many new businesses have opened along the main road {SS Erin Road} including insurance companies, fast food outlets, entertainment centres etc.

Debe has been traditionally an 'Indian' area where descendants of Indian immigrants settled, but with the introduction of low cost housing schemes by the Government, there has been a small explosion in the population size in recent years. Labour is not confined to agricultural production, Debe has given Trinidad and Tobago fine young professionals in nearly every field of work.

The reputation of Debe is firmly cemented in its famous 'doubles', a delicious curry made from channa (chick peas) and served sandwiched between two small round and soft flour baras. These are sold in roadside stalls in the central hub, an area known to locals as 'Bara Plaza'. Also famous for 'aloo pies' and other delicious delicacies, people drive from all over the island of Trinidad to Debe to purchase these popular and savoury items. It is not unusual to find Trinidadians taking along their foreign visitors to sample the unique cuisine. --
