It was discovered by the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901–04 (BrNAE), which named it "Brown Island" because of its color and its island-like character. It was named it "Brown Peninsula" by New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1961 after it was described a peninsula.
